Recipe Tips
- Wood Chips – Make sure to add chips to the smoker every 15 minutes if your smoker does not have an automatic feature. Make this smoked ham with pecan, oak or hickory wood chips.
- Baking Pan – We used a baking sheet to cook the ham in, but you can also use a disposable pan. This helps for an easy clean up. You can just throw the aluminum pan away.
- Glaze – We like to prepare the glaze once the ham has reached an internal temperature of 135 degrees. This way you can pour the glaze over the ham after removing from the smoker.
- Serving Ham – When purchasing a ham, plan on about ¾ pound per person that you are planning on serving. This will also allow for leftovers for all the leftover ham recipes.
- Meat Thermometer – Make sure to use a meat thermometer to make sure your ham reaches 140 degrees internal temperature. Check the temperature in the thickest part of the ham.
- Cooking Ham – There is no need to cover the pre-cooked ham with foil when you place in the smoker. All you need to do is slide the pan with the ham in the smoker and close the smoker lid.
How Long to Smoke Ham
Use an instant-read meat thermometer to make sure that the ham is cooked to a safe temperature before removing it from the smoker. A big ham will take longer to cook and a smaller ham will cook quicker.
Your ham should cook to a temperature of 140 degrees when it is safe to remove from the smoker. Cook the ham for about 20 minutes per pound. Cook time will vary based on your smoker.
