Variations Ideas

  • Ham Variation – We use a fully cooked boneless ham in this recipe, but you can use different types of ham. You can use a bone-in ham or spiral cut ham. If using a spiral ham, place the ham cut side down in the baking dish. These ham options can be purchased at the grocery store.
  • Glaze – We love the brown sugar sauce but feel free to use what you prefer. A bourbon glaze is always a great option. You can also add a dry rub on the ham before placing in the smoker. Mustard is also a great addition to the glaze ingredients.
  • Wood Chips – There are many wood chips options when smoking a ham. You can use a apple wood chips, hickory or cherry wood chips. All options give the ham so much flavor.
  • Honey – Substitute the maple syrup with honey. Your ham will still have incredible flavor.

How to Smoke Boneless Ham

  • Step 1 – Heat Smoker – Preheat the pellet grill smoker to 250 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • Step 4 – Prepare the Ham Glaze – Add the brown sugar, maple syrup and bourbon to a small saucepan.  Bring the mixture to a low simmer, whisk and cook for approximately 5-10 minutes until the brown sugar is dissolved.
  • Step 5 – Remove String – Remove any string from the ham and slice it.
  • Step 6 – Pour Glaze on Ham – Pour the glaze over the sliced ham and coat it with a basting brush.
  • Step 7 – Serve and Enjoy – Then the ham is ready to serve and enjoy.

Recipe Tips

  • Wood Chips – Make sure to add chips to the smoker every 15 minutes if your smoker does not have an automatic feature.  Make this smoked ham with pecan, oak or hickory wood chips.
  • Baking Pan – We used a baking sheet to cook the ham in, but you can also use a disposable pan. This helps for an easy clean up. You can just throw the aluminum pan away.
  • Glaze – We like to prepare the glaze once the ham has reached an internal temperature of 135 degrees. This way you can pour the glaze over the ham after removing from the smoker.
  • Serving Ham – When purchasing a ham, plan on about ¾ pound per person that you are planning on serving. This will also allow for leftovers for all the leftover ham recipes.
  • Meat Thermometer – Make sure to use a meat thermometer to make sure your ham reaches 140 degrees internal temperature. Check the temperature in the thickest part of the ham.
  • Cooking Ham – There is no need to cover the pre-cooked ham with foil when you place in the smoker. All you need to do is slide the pan with the ham in the smoker and close the smoker lid.

How Long to Smoke Ham

Use an instant-read meat thermometer to make sure that the ham is cooked to a safe temperature before removing it from the smoker.  A big ham will take longer to cook and a smaller ham will cook quicker.

Your ham should cook to a temperature of 140 degrees when it is safe to remove from the smoker. Cook the ham for about 20 minutes per pound. Cook time will vary based on your smoker.

How to Store Leftover Smoked Ham

Refrigerate the leftovers in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

How to Reheat Leftover Ham

Leftover smoke flavor ham can be reheated in the microwave or in the oven. Leftover ham can be served with your side dishes or made into another recipe.

You want to place your oven on low heat of 275 degrees and cover with foil. I usually use this method if I have a lot of ham leftovers.

You can use the Microwave to reheat the leftover ham, just make sure to not heat it to long as it could dry it out.
