  • Then lay a piece of parchment paper on top of the tator tots and gently press down on the tator tots with a cast iron press or spatula.
  • Cook for a few minutes (2-4 minutes) until the tator tots are golden brown.
  • Then gently flip the smashed tator tots and cook the other side for a few more minutes (2-4 minutes) until golden brown.

Notes

These are best served fresh as they are crispy and delicious but you can also store the leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
Recipe Tips
  • Prepare Griddle - Prepare the griddle before placing the tator tots down on the flat top grill. The tator tots do not need to be thawed before placing the griddle.
  • Parchment Paper - For best results use parchment paper to lay on the tator tots before pressing with the burger press.
  • Cooking Time - Cooking time will vary based on your griddle and the top of tots that you use.
Variations Ideas
  • Change Seasonings - There are many different ways to season these smashed tots. You can season with chili powder, paprika, garlic or taco seasoning. Use what you have or prefer.
  • Add Topping - Smashed tots can be served with many different toppings. We like to top with sour cream, sprinkle with cheddar cheese, chopped bacon, Jalapeño, veggies, and green onions.
  • Extra Crispy - If you want your tator tots to be extra crispy, then leave the tots on the griddle a little longer.
