Recipe Notes

These are best served fresh as they are crispy and delicious but you can also store the leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
Recipe Tips
  • Prepare Griddle – Prepare the griddle before placing the tator tots down on the flat top grill. The tator tots do not need to be thawed before placing the griddle.
  • Parchment Paper – For best results use parchment paper to lay on the tator tots before pressing with the burger press.
  • Cooking Time – Cooking time will vary based on your griddle and the top of tots that you use.
Variations Ideas
  • Change Seasonings – There are many different ways to season these smashed tots. You can season with chili powder, paprika, garlic or taco seasoning. Use what you have or prefer.
  • Add Topping – Smashed tots can be served with many different toppings. We like to top with sour cream, sprinkle with cheddar cheese, chopped bacon, Jalapeño, veggies, and green onions.
  • Extra Crispy – If you want your tator tots to be extra crispy, then leave the tots on the griddle a little longer.

  3. Sue Borg says:

I’m wondering why you wouldn’t throw a bag of frozen tater tots in the refrigerator the night before to thaw and add them to the Blackstone already thawed.

  4. Carrie Barnard says:

Sue – You definitely can do that if you prefer. I find that I usually forget to move them the night before so I find this process works the best for me!
