- Add Topping – Smashed tots can be served with many different toppings. We like to top with sour cream, cheese, chopped bacon and green onions.
- Extra Crispy – If you want your tator tots to be extra crispy, then leave the tots on the griddle a little longer.
How to Make Smashed Tator Tots on Blackstone
- Step 1 – Prepare Grill – Preheat the Blackstone Grill over medium low heat (approximately 350 degrees F).
- Step 2 – Add Oil to Grill – Spread the oil and butter out onto the grill.
- Step 3 – Add Tator Tots to Griddle – Place the frozen tator tots directly on the grill and heat them for a couple of minutes (moving frequently) to thaw out the tator tots.
- Step 4 – Turn up heat – Once the tator tots are thawed, turn up the heat on the Blackstone griddle to medium high heat (approximately 400 degrees F).
- Step 5 – Press Tator Tots – Then lay a piece of parchment paper on top of the tator tots. Then gently press down on the tator tots with a cast iron press or spatula.
- Step 6 – Cook Tator Tots – Cook for a few minutes (2-4 minutes) until the tator tots are golden brown.
- Step 7 – Flip Tator Tots – Then gently flip the smashed tator tots and cook the other side for a few more minutes (2-4 minutes) until golden brown.
- Step 8 – Remove from the grill – season with the salt or your favorite seasoning.
- Step 9 – Serve and Enjoy – We recommend serving smashed tots warm.
Recipe Tips
- Prepare Griddle – Prepare the griddle before placing the tator tots down on the flat top grill. The tator tots do not need to be thawed before placing the griddle.
- Parchment Paper – For best results use parchment paper to lay on the tator tots before pressing with the burger press.
- Cooking Time – Cooking time will vary based on your griddle and the top of tots that you use.
How to Store
These are best served fresh as they are crispy and delicious but you can also store the leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
