Ingredients

For the Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup Mayonnaise
  • 2 Tablespoon Barbecue Sauce

For the Onion Strips:

  • 1 Large Egg
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 1 cup All Purpose Flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Black Pepper
  • 1 cup Vegetable Oil for frying

For the Burgers:

  • 2 pounds Lean Ground Beef
  • 1 Tablespoon Oil
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 3/4 teaspoon Black Pepper
  • 4 Slices Cheddar Cheese
  • 1 Dill Pickle sliced lengthwise into 1/4 thick inch slices
  • 4 Hamburger Buns
  • 4 Lettuce Leaves

Instructions

For the Sauce:

  • Mix together the sauce ingredients in a small bowl.  Cover and refrigerate until ready to use.

For the Onions:

  • Slice the onion into strips.
  • In one bowl, whisk together the milk and eggs.  Set aside.
  • In a separate bowl, stir together the flour, salt and pepper.
  • Dip the onion strips in the milk mixture and then coat them with the flour mixture.  Repeat the process one more time so that the onion strips are doubled battered.
  • Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot until it reaches 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Fry the onion strips in the oil for 3-5 minutes until they are golden brown.  Remove from the oil and place on a plate lined with paper towels.

For the Burgers:

  • Preheat the grill over medium high heat (approximately 400 degrees F).
  • Rub the grill grates with oil.
  • Divide the beef into 4 even balls (approximately ½ pound each) and shape into patties.
  • Place the patties on the grill. Season the patties with salt and pepper.
  • Cook the patties for 3-5 minutes.
  • Flip the burgers and cook until burgers are cooked through (3-4 more minutes). Place a slice of cheese onto each patty for the last minute of the cooking time.
  • Place the sliced pickles on the grill and cook for 2-3 minutes per side until they are grilled and browned.
  • Add the buns to the Grill, cut-side down.  Cook for 30 seconds to 1 minute until they are golden brown.
  • Serve the patties on the buns topped with the grilled pickles, fried onions, lettuce and the sauce.
  • Serve immediately and enjoy!

Notes

Recipe Tips
  • Burger Sauce - Combine the sauce ingredients and allow it to chill. This helps to marinate the ingredients together.
  • Onion Strips - We love making the onion strips from scratch. This allows the burger to give it so much flavor.
  • Prepare Grill - Preheat the grill and oil the grill grates. This prevents the burgers from sticking to the grill. Cook the burgers on medium heat. You can even cook this burger on an indoor grill pan.
Variation Ideas
  • Seasoning - Feel free to change the seasoning to combine with the ground beef. We have added in chili powder for a bit of heat.
  • BBQ Sauce Top your burger with a tangy BBQ Sauce for added flavor.
  • Burger Toppings - Feel free to change the burger toppings. We have added slices tomato, add cheese, bacon, onion, jalapeno peppers and avocado.
  • Hamburger Buns - We love to serve with buns but you can also serve without a bun. With so many layers, you will need a fork to enjoy this burger.
