This Cowboy Burger has become a family favorite. It traditionally made with onion rings, ground beef patties, and a burger sauce. It is topped with a BBQ sauce and cheese slices.
We usually have to enjoy with a fork because of all the delicious layers.

- Burger Toppings – Feel free to change the burger toppings. We have added slices tomato, add cheese, bacon, onion, jalapeno peppers and avocado.
- Hamburger Buns – We love to serve with buns but you can also serve without a bun. With so many layers, you will need a fork to enjoy this burger.
How to Make a Cowboy Burger
For the Sauce:
- Step 1 – Mix Sauce Ingredients – Mix together the sauce ingredients in a small bowl. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use.
For the Onions:
- Step 2 – Slice Onions – Slice the onion into strips.
- Step 2 – Mix Milk and Eggs – In one bowl, whisk together the milk and eggs. Set aside.
- Step 3 – Mix in Flour – In a separate bowl, stir together the flour, salt and pepper.
- Step 4 – Dip Onion Strips – Dip the onion strips in the milk mixture and then coat them with the flour mixture. Repeat the process one more time so that the onion strips are doubled battered.
- Step 5 – Heat Oil – Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot until it reaches 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Step 6 – Fry Onion – Fry the onion strips in the oil for 3-5 minutes until they are golden brown. Remove from the oil and place on a plate lined with paper towels.
How to Cook the Burgers
- Step 1 – Heat Grill – Preheat the grill over medium high heat (approximately 400 degrees F).
- Step 2 – Oil Grill Grates – Rub the grill grates with oil.
- Step 3 – Divide Beef – Divide the beef into 4 even balls (approximately ½ pound each) and shape into patties.
- Step 5 – Place Patties – Place the patties on the grill. Season the patties with salt and pepper.
- Step 6 – Cook Patties – Cook the patties for 3-5 minutes
- Step 7 – Flip Burgers – Flip the burgers and cook until burgers are cooked through (3-4 more minutes). Place a slice of cheese onto each patty for the last minute of the cooking time.
- Step 8 – Cook Pickles – Place the sliced pickles on the grill. Then cook for 2-3 minutes per side until they are grilled and browned.
- Step 9 – Toast Buns – Add the buns to the Grill, cut-side down. Cook for 30 seconds to 1 minute until they are golden brown.
- Step 10 – Make Cowboy Burgers – Serve the patties on the buns topped with the grilled pickles, fried onions, lettuce, tomato and the sauce. We have even added crispy bacon.
- Step 11 – Serve – Serve immediately and enjoy.

- Onion Strips – We love making the onion strips from scratch. This allows the burger to give it so much flavor.
- Prepare Grill – Preheat the grill and oil the grill grates. This prevents the burgers from sticking to the grill. Cook the burgers on medium heat.

Cowboy Burger
Ingredients
For the Sauce:
- 1/2 cup Mayonnaise
- 2 Tablespoon Barbecue Sauce
For the Onion Strips:
- 1 Large Egg
- 1 cup Milk
- 1 cup All Purpose Flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons Salt
- 1 teaspoon Black Pepper
- 1 cup Vegetable Oil for frying
For the Burgers:
- 2 pounds Lean Ground Beef
- 1 Tablespoon Oil
- 1 1/2 teaspoon Salt
- 3/4 teaspoon Black Pepper
- 4 Slices Cheddar Cheese
- 1 Dill Pickle sliced lengthwise into ¼ thick inch slices
- 4 Hamburger Buns
- 4 Lettuce Leaves
