Variations Ideas

  • Seasoning – Feel free to change the seasoning when making these burgers. You can add in different spices or fresh herbs. I have even added in a teaspoons Worcestershire sauce for added flavor.
  • Bread Crumbs – We love adding in bread crumbs for added flavor. It helps to keep the patty together for a twist on a classic recipe.
  • Make Greek Burger – For the ultimate burger experience add in dried oregano to the turkey mixture. Zest in some lemon for a hint of lemon flavor. Then you can serve with a Greek style salad full of tomatoes and cucumber.
  • Oil Option to Use – Use any oil with a high smoke point. Vegetable oil, canola oil, coconut oil or avocado oil will all work great in this recipe.
  • Add Cheese to the Turkey Burger – This turkey burger would be delicious with a slice of cheese. Feel free to use different types of cheeses.

How to Cook Turkey Burgers on the Grill

Combining the seasoning with the ground turkey in a bowl

Step 1 – Combing Turkey Burger ingredients – In a large mixing bowl, stir together the ground turkey and egg. Then add in salt, pepper, onion powder and garlic powder until well combined.  Use your hands to thoroughly mix the ingredients.

Forming the ground turkey into patties stacked on a plate

Step 2 – Divide Equal Parts – Divide the ground turkey mixture into 6 even balls (approximately ⅓ lb each). Then form the balls into patties that are approximately 4 inches wide and 1 inch thick. Then make an indent in the center of each patty with your thumb.

  • Step 3 – Chill Patties – Place the patties in the refrigerator (covered in plastic wrap) while you preheat the grill.
  • Step 4 – Heat Grill – Preheat the Grill over medium high heat (approximately 450-500 degrees Fahrenheit). Rub oil on the grill grates to prevent the patties from sticking to the grill.
  • Step 5 – Grill Patties – Place the patties on the grill over direct heat.  Cook for 4-8 minutes (flipping the patties halfway through the cook time). Cook until the turkey patties reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Use an instant-read meat thermometer to make sure that the patties are cooked to a safe temperature.
  • Step 6 – Toast the Buns – Place the buns on the grill and cook for 1 minute until they are browned slightly.  Watch them closely so that they do not burn.

Recipe Tips

  • Prepare Grill – Before placing the turkey burgers on the grill, make sure it is preheated and oiled.
  • Combining the Ingredients – For best results we like to combine the ingredients with our hands. This helps to make sure everything is combined completely.
  • Divide Mixture – When preparing the turkey patties, make sure you divide the meat mixture evenly. This ensures that the burgers cook evenly and about the same time.
  • Indent Patties – To help cook the patties evenly, gently press your thumb in the middle of the patty.
