Grilled Avocado Burger is a delicious ground beef recipe that is simple to make. The ground beef is seasoned with simple ingredients. Then rolled into balls and placed on the grill and grilled to perfection.

Ingredients

  • Lean Ground Beef – You can also use ground turkey, ground sirloin, or ground chuck
  • Oil – We like olive oil, but you can use oil of your choice
  • Ripe Fresh Avocados (sliced) – Use ripe avocados to easily slice

How to Grill an Avocado Burger

Step 1 – Divide the ground beef into 6 even balls (approximately ⅓ lb each). Then form the balls into patties that are approximately 4 inches wide and 1 inch thick.  Place patties in fridge.

Step 2 – Preheat grill then place the beef burgers on the grill rack over direct heat.  Cook for 4-8 minutes (flipping the patties halfway through the cook time) depending on how you like your burger cooked (see notes).

Step 3 – Place the buns on the grill and cook for 1 minute until they are browned slightly.  Watch them closely so that they do not burn.

Step 4 – Remove the beef from the grill and add them to each  of the hamburger buns on top of the lettuce. Then assemble the burgers with the tomatoes and avocado slices.  Serve warm and enjoy! 

What Goes on a Burger with Avocado

There are many toppings for an Avocado Burger. If you are looking for some different options, these are some of my favorites.

  • Slice of Cheese – Pepper Jack Cheese, Cheddar, or Monterrey Jack Cheese
  • Salt and Pepper
  • Fresh squeeze lime juice
  • Tomato Slice

How Long to Grill a Burger

When you are ready to grill a burger, preheat the grill and oil the grates. Use any oil with a high smoke point. Vegetable oil, canola oil, coconut oil or avocado oil will all work great in this recipe.

Cooking time will vary but it will take about 15 to 20 minutes turning the burgers on the grill. We like to use an meat thermometer to cook the burger to how you liked them cooked.

Here are the internal temperatures needed based on how you like your burgers prepared.  

  • Rare Burgers – 125 degrees F 
  • Medium-Rare Burgers – 135 degrees F 
  • Medium Burgers – 145 degrees F 
  • Well-Done Burgers – 160 degrees F

Frequently Asked Questions

Should you Grill the Avocado?

We did not grill the avocado, but you can. Grilled avocados are amazing, and really amp up the flavor of the burger. Avocados are nicely grilled and we love the grilled marks.
For the final minutes of grilling the burgers, you can place the avocados on the grill or you can place them in the grill pan.

How to Cook on the Stovetop

If you are prefer you can still cook this delicious avocado burger on the stove top. Prepare the hamburger meat as indicated in the recipe. We recommend cooking the burger in a cast iron skillet, but any skillet will work.
Cook the burger once the skillet has heated with oil. The outer edge of the burger will by crispy while still staying juicy on the inside. Top with avocado and serve with your favorite sides.

How to Store Leftover Grilled Avocado Burger

Refrigerate any leftovers in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

Instructions

  • Divide the ground beef into 6 even balls (approximately ⅓ lb each). Then form the balls into patties that are approximately 4 inches wide and 1 inch thick.  Place the patties in the refrigerator (covered in plastic wrap) while you preheat the grill.
  • Preheat the Grill over medium high heat (approximately 450-500 degrees F). Rub oil on the grill grates to prevent the patties from sticking to the grill.
  • Place the patties on the grill over direct heat.  Cook for 4-8 minutes (flipping the patties halfway through the cook time) depending on how you like your burger cooked (see notes).  Use an instant-read meat thermometer to make sure that the burgers are cooked to your preference.
  • Place the buns on the grill and cook for 1 minute until they are browned slightly.  Watch them closely so that they do not burn.
  • Add a lettuce leaf and onions to the bottom bun of each bun.
  • Remove the beef from the grill and add them to each  of the hamburger buns on top of the lettuce.
  • Then top each patty with the tomatoes and avocado slices.  Serve warm and enjoy!
