How to Make Homemade Pizza Dough on the Grill
Step 1 – Combine dry ingredients – In a large mixing bowl, stir together 1 cup of the flour, yeast, sugar, salt, garlic powder and basil leaves with a wooden spoon.
Step 2 – Mix in oil and water – Add in the olive oil and the warm water. Stir until well combined.
Step 3 – Form into a dough ball – Then slowly add in the remaining flour, stirring until the dough is formed into a ball and begins to pull away from the sides of the bowl. The ball will be sticky but still easily manageable with your hands.
Step 4 – Prepare the Bowl – Drizzle some olive oil in a separate bowl. Move the pizza dough into this bowl. Gently roll the pizza dough around the edges of the bowl until it’s coated in the oil. Then cover the bowl with plastic wrap and keep it in a warm place.
How to Make Grilled Pizza Dough
- Step 1 – Heat the Grill – Preheat the grill over medium high heat (approximately 450 degrees F).
Step 2 – Knead the Dough – Once the dough has risen, move the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead the bread a few times until it’s smooth. Then roll the dough into a 12 inch circle with a rolling pin.
Step 3 – Poke Holes in Dough – Use a fork to poke holes all over the center of the pizza dough to keep it from bubbling in the oven.
Step 4 – Oil the Grates – Rub the grill grates with the avocado oil so that the dough doesn’t stick to the grill. Use a floured baking sheet to place the pizza dough directly on the grill.
Step 5 – Remove dough – Remove the dough from the grill back onto the baking sheet. Flip the pizza dough so that the grilled side is up.
Step 6 – Add your favorite toppings – Then top the pizza with your preferred sauce and toppings. Make sure to leave approximately 1 inch of the crust around the outside of the pizza.
Step 7 – Place pizza back on grill – Carefully slide the pizza back onto the grill.
- Step 8 – Close the Lid – Close the lid and cook for 2-3 more minutes until the bottom of the pizza is browned and the cheese on the pizza is bubbly.
- Step 9 – Serve and Enjoy – Remove the pizza from the grill onto a cutting board. Slice and serve the pizza. Enjoy!
Expert Tips
- Make ahead – This pizza dough can be made ahead of time. Let the dough rise at room temperature, then deflate it and wrap the dough in plastic wrap (so it doesn’t dry out) and refrigerate for 2-3 days. Let rest in a oiled bowl.
- Flip the Crust – When cooking the dough, there is no need to flip the dough. The other side will cook after adding your toppings.
- Pizza Peel – You can place pizza on a baking sheet or a pizza peel to roll the dough.
- Gas Grill – We made this pizza on a gas grill, but you can use a charcoal grill. Just make sure it is a hot grill.
- Cooking Pizza – After adding the toppings, heat the pizza until the cheese is melted.
