Make it a pizza night outdoors with this simple pizza recipe. Set up a pizza bar so everyone can top their own. Add a salad and eat outside for a complete meal idea. Cooking pizza on the grill is a family favorite meal idea.

Ingredients needed - flour, yeast, sugar, salt, garlic powder, basil leaves, olive oil, avocado oil

Ingredients:

  • All Purpose Flour
  • Instant Yeast (2 ¼ teaspoon)
  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • Garlic Powder
  • Dried Basil Leaves
  • Olive Oil
  • Warm Water
  • Avocado Oil (for cooking)

How to Make Homemade Pizza Dough on the Grill:

  • Step 1 – Combine dry ingredients – In a large mixing bowl, stir together 1 cup of the flour, yeast, sugar, salt, garlic powder and basil leaves with a wooden spoon.
  • Step 2 – Mix in oil and water – Add in the olive oil and the warm water.  Stir until well combined.
Mixing the ingredients together in a bowl
  • Step 3 – Form into a dough ball – Then slowly add in the remaining flour, stirring until the dough is formed into a ball and begins to pull away from the sides of the bowl.  The ball will be sticky but still easily manageable with your hands.
  • Step 4 – Prepare the Bowl – Drizzle some olive oil in a separate bowl.  Move the pizza dough into this bowl. Gently roll the pizza dough around the edges of the bowl until it’s coated in the oil.
  • Step 5 – Cover the Bowl – Then cover the bowl with plastic wrap and keep it in a warm place.  Allow the dough to rise for 30 minutes or until the dough has doubled in size.

How to Cook Pizza on the Grill:

  • Step 6 – Heat the Grill – Preheat the grill over medium high heat (approximately 450 degrees F).
  • Step 7 – Knead the Dough – Once the dough has risen, move the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead the bread a few times until it’s smooth.  Then roll the dough into a 12 inch circle with a rolling pin.
  • Step 8 – Poke Holes in Dough – Use a fork to poke holes all over the center of the pizza dough to keep it from bubbling in the oven.

  • Step 9 – Oil the Grates – Rub the grill grates with the avocado oil so that the dough doesn’t stick to the grill.
  • Step 10 – Place dough on Grill – Use a floured baking sheet to place the pizza dough directly on the grill.  Close the lid and cook for 2-3 minutes until browned.
  • Step 11 – Remove dough – Remove the dough from the grill back onto the baking sheet. Flip the pizza dough so that the grilled side is up.

Tips for Grilled Pizza Dough:

  • Make ahead – This pizza dough can be made ahead of time.  Let the dough rise at room temperature, then deflate it and wrap the dough in plastic wrap (so it doesn’t dry out) and refrigerate for 2-3 days. Let rest in a oiled bowl.
  • Flip the Crust – When cooking the dough, there is no need to flip the dough. The other side will cook after adding your toppings.
  • Pizza Peel – You can place pizza on a baking sheet or a pizza peel to roll the dough.
  • Gas Grill – We made this pizza on a gas grill, but you can use a charcoal grill. Just make sure it is a hot grill.
  • Cooking Pizza – After adding the toppings, heat the pizza until the cheese is melted.
