How to Make Bake Potatoes in the Smoker

  • Step 1 – Heat Smoker – Preheat a smoker to 225 degrees F with a water pan. Use your favorite type of wood chips.  Any work well in this recipe.  
  • Step 2 – Poke Holes in Potato – Use a fork to poke various holes into the potatoes. Place the oil in a shallow bowl and place the sea salt in a separate shallow bowl.

  • Step 3 – Cover in Oil – Then place the potatoes in the bowl with the oil. Then turn it to ensure that all sides of the potatoes are covered in the oil. Then move the oiled potatoes to the bowl with the salt. Then turn to coat the outside of the potato with the salt.

  • Step 4 – Smoke Potatoes – Place the potatoes in the smoker directly on the grill grates.  Smoke them for 2 – 2.5 hours until the potatoes are fork tender.

  • Pellet Grill – Make sure to add chips to the smoker every 15 minutes. If your smoker does not have an automatic feature.

The kind of potatoes that we used in this recipe is a russet potato. This seems to be the best potato to use in your smoker, but you can use other kinds. You can try Yukon Gold Potatoes or Red Potatoes.

The cooking time may change based on the type of potato and the size.
