What is a Hobo Dinner?

Hobo Dinner recipes have been pleasing families since back in the Depression days. The foil packets usually container a protein, vegetables and seasoning. They can be made on the grill, campfire or in the oven.

Variation Ideas

  • Vegetables – Feel free to add different vegetables to the foil pack. We have added in green beans, corn on the cob, and small red potatoes for a simple variation.
  • Seasoning – Feel free to change or add seasoning to the foil packets. You can add in fresh herbs such as rosemary, basil, or thyme.
  • Chicken – We used chicken breast in this recipe but you can also use chicken thighs or chicken tenders.

How to Make Chicken Hobo Dinner

  • Step 1 – Heat Grill – Preheat your grill over medium high heat (approximately 450 degrees Fahrenheit).

Step 2 – Whisk Chicken Broth – In a small bowl, whisk together the cream of chicken soup and chicken broth.

Step 3 – Spray Foil – Coat 4 large pieces of heavy duty sheets of foil with non-stick cooking spray. You can also drizzle with olive oil. Place one potato (peeled and sliced) in the middle of each piece of foil. Then add carrots and onions.

Step 4 – Add Chicken – Place a chicken breast on top of the vegetables on each piece of foil. Season the chicken with salt, pepper and ranch seasoning mix.

Step 5 – Top with Soup – Pour the soup mixture evenly on top of each foil packet.

Step 6 – Foil Foil – Fold up the sides of the foil. Then fold up the other sides to make a foil pack. Then place on grill and cook for about 45 minutes.

Step 7 – Once they are done, carefully open the foil packs and then serve and enjoy.

This Hobo Chicken Dinner Oven Recipe can easily be made in the oven.

  • Bake these hobo dinners in a preheated oven at 400 degrees.
  • Place the foil packets on a baking sheet.
  • Bake the foil packets for 50-60 minutes. Cook until the tender chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees. 
  • Use meat thermometer to make sure chicken is cooked thorough.

  • Chicken and Potatoes – Cook chicken and potatoes until chicken is cooked through and potatoes are tender. Make sure to use a meat thermometer to ensure chicken is cooked thorough.
  • Foil Sheets – To prevent the chicken and vegetables from sticking, make sure to spray with cooking spray. These tin foil dinners could better when they do not stick to the foil.
  • Folding the Foil Packets – Completely close the sides around the chicken and vegetables. This helps to keep the items from falling out and locks in the steam. It helps to cook the ingredients evenly.

  • 4 Small Potatoes peeled and sliced into 1/4″ thick slices
  • 1/2 onion sliced
  • 3 Carrots peeled and sliced into 1 inch pieces
  • 1 can Cream of Chicken Soup
  • 1/2 cup Chicken Broth
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 packet dry Ranch Dressing Mix

  • Place on the grill on medium high heat (or a campfire) for approximately 45 minutes-60 minutes or until the chicken breasts are cooked through (internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Once they are done, carefully open the foil packs and then serve and enjoy!

    In the notes after the directions you say you can bake in oven at 375 degrees F. for 50-60 minutes. Then in the upper part where you have tips and variations you have direction for baking in oven and it says to bake at 400 degrees F. for 50-60 minutes. Which temp should I use?
