Step 5 – Place the potatoes on a large piece of foil. Try to spread them out into a single layer on the foil. Cover the potatoes with another piece of foil and seal the edges to create a foil packet. Gently poke the top of the packet a few times with a fork to allow the heat to escape from the packet.

  • Step 8 – Once the potatoes are starting to brown, carefully flip the entire foil packet of potatoes on the grill and cook for another 5-10 minutes until the potatoes are fork tender.
  • Step 9 – Carefully remove the potatoes from the foil packet (be careful as they will be hot) and then the potatoes are ready to serve while warm and enjoy! You can even squeeze fresh lemon juice over the top of the red potatoes right before serving.

Expert Tips

  • Cut Red Potatoes – If the red potatoes are larger, cut the quarters into small pieces so that they cook evenly and quickly.
  • Heavy Duty Foil – When making these red potatoes make sure to use heavy duty aluminum foil for best results. This helps to prevent the foil from tearing and the potatoes from burning.
  • Prepare Foil Packet – Make sure to preheat the grill so that it cooks the red potatoes evenly. We also recommend to poke holes in the foil after adding in the red potatoes. This allows heat to escape the foil packet.
  • Grill Pan – If you prefer, instead of using aluminum foil you can cook the red potatoes in a grill pan or a cast iron skillet directly on the grill grates.

How Long Does it Take to Grill Red Potatoes

Cooking red potatoes on the grill takes about 15-20 minutes depending on the size of the red potatoes.

We usually check the potatoes after about 12-15 minutes. If the red potatoes have turned golden brown and are fork tender then they are done. We recommend flipping the foil pack one time to ensure that are red potatoes are cooked. Make sure to not overcook the potatoes.
