Do you need to boil potatoes before grilling?

There is no need to boil the potatoes before grilling. Simply prepare the potatoes by peeling and slicing them in about the size and thickness. Add them to the foil with your favorite seasoning and grill.

After about 30 minutes, your potatoes should be cooked tender and ready to serve.

Ingredients needed - potatoes, onion, butter, salt and pepper

Ingredients:

  • Russet Potatoes
  • Onion
  • Butter
  • Salt
  • Pepper

How to Make Foil Pack Potatoes on Grill:

  • Step 1 – Peel the potatoes and slice into 1/4” thick slices.
  • Step 2 – Peel and thinly slice the onion.
  • Step 3 – Place foil on the counter and spray with a non-stick cooking spray. I used 1 piece of foil per each potato.
  • Step 4 – Place the potatoes and onion slices on the foil.  Season each packet with approximately ¼ tsp of the Salt and Pepper and top with 1 Tablespoon of the butter. Adding the butter and seasoning gives the potatoes the perfect amount of flavor.

  • Step 6 – Grill over medium-high heat for 30-40 minutes until the potatoes are soft. I like to check at about 15 minutes to about 20 minutes so they do not over cook.
  • Step 7 – Remove the heat, be careful when opening the foil packet and enjoy.

Grilled Foil Pack Potatoes Tips:

  • Heavy Duty Aluminum Foil – We used heavy duty foil to make sure that it doesn’t break when cooking.
  • Carefully Open Foil Packs – After you have finished baking potatoes, be careful open the foil packs. Hot steam will come out when you open the foil packs. Use a fork to pierce the packs before opening, if you prefer.
  • Cut Potatoes evenly – Make sure to cut the potatoes about the same size so they cook evenly. Thickness of the potatoes will depend on how long it takes to cook them.
  • Serve Immediately – For best results we recommend serving these potatoes immediately.
  • Olive Oil – You can use olive oil instead of butter if you prefer. I usually spray the foil with olive oil before adding the potatoes.

What temp Should I Grill Potatoes in Foil?

We recommend grilling potatoes in foil at medium high heat. I place the foil packs directly on the heat for best results.
