Recipe Variations

  • Buns – You can use any type of buns to make this burger. We have used ciabatta rolls and they turned out so delicious.
  • Seasoning – Change the seasoning to what you prefer. Another great addition to this recipe is fresh basil.
  • Sausage – We used hot and mild sausage, but you can also add in ground beef. Sausage and meat make a delicious burger.

How to Make Italian Sausage Burgers

Step 3 – Indent Patties – Use your hands to form an approximately 2 inch indentation into the center of each of the patties. This helps to prevent them from puffing up when they are grilled.

Step 4 – Add patties to grill – Place the patties on the grill over direct heat.  Cook for 4-5 minutes without moving the patties. Place the cheese on the patties for the last minute of the cook time.

Step 5 – Sauté Peppers and Onions – While the patties are cooking, heat the oil in a large skillet over medium high heat.  Add the red peppers and onions.  Season with salt and pepper.

  • Step 9 – Serve and Enjoy – Remove from heat.  Serve the patties on the toasted buns topped with the pepper and onion mixture.  Enjoy!

How Long to Grill Italian Sausage Burgers

Grilling burgers do not take long as long as your grill has been preheated. Place patties on the grill and grill for about 4 minutes per side over medium heat. You may need to use a meat thermometer to make sure the patties are done.

Cook until the internal temperature of 160 degrees. You may need to cook a minute longer if still pink. This burger cooks perfectly on a gas grill, charcoal grill and even on a grill pan.

How to Cook on the Stovetop

If you prefer, you can cook these burgers on the stovetop. Prepare as the recipe indicates and cook in a cast iron skillet. Cook burgers in a preheated skillet for about 4 minutes on each side until fully cooked or cheese melted.
