If you have been following me for a while you know I love grilled vegetables. Parmesan Grilled Zucchini Recipe and Grilled Broccoli in Foil are always on the menu when we grill out. Since I love tomatoes, I knew grilling them would make them even better.

Complete your summertime meal with this easy grilled side dish that everyone will love. Another tasty fruit to grill is Grilled Bananas, Grilled Peaches, Grilled Mango and Grilled Apples. These fruit sides are the perfect side dish to serve with chicken kabobs.

Why Do People Grill Tomatoes?

Grilling tomatoes brings out the natural sweetness of this delicious fruit. It only takes a few minutes to cook. Make sure to not to overcook them so it is to flip and to remove from the grill.

You can easily seasoning with a variety of spices and toppings to make them your own.

Ingredients

Tomatoes, pepper, salt, oil, fresh basil, garlic salt
  • Firm Roma Tomatoes – Beefsteak tomatoes also work great for this recipe. But any tomato will work.
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil – You can also use avocado oil or vegetable oil. Helps to keep the tomatoes from sticking to the grill.

  • Fresh Basil Leaves – We like serving with thinly slice basil.

Variations Ideas

  • Marinate Tomatoes – If you prefer, you can marinate the tomatoes in this Grilled Vegetable Marinade.
  • Fresh Herbs – Season with other types of fresh herbs such as thyme or rosemary.  

How to Make Grilled Tomatoes

  • Step 1 – Preheat a grill over medium high heat and rub the grill grates with olive oil.

Step 2 – Cut the tomatoes in half widthwise (through the center of the tomato).

Step 3 – Drizzle the cut side of the tomatoes with olive oil and season with the garlic powder, salt and pepper. 

  • Step 4 – Place the tomatoes on the grill (directly on the grill grates) cut side down.  Grill for 4-6 minutes with the lid closed until grill marks are visible on the tomatoes. 
  • Step 5 – Carefully flip the tomatoes and grill for 2-3 more minutes.  
  • Step 6 – Carefully remove the tomatoes from the grill. 
  • Step 7 – Serve topped with the fresh basil leaves and enjoy! 

Recipe Tips

  • Cutting Tomatoes – Slice the tomatoes in half. This helps to keep them about the same size and they grill evenly.
  • Grilling Time – Grilling time will vary depending on your grill and the size of your tomatoes. Watch closely and make sure to grill with the lid close for the best flavor.

Serving Suggestions

Grilled tomatoes can easily be served on a platter for a delicious summer side dish. But we have even cut them up in smaller pieces and enjoyed them in a caprese salad. Topped with parmesan cheese, feta or fresh mozzarella.
