Variations Ideas

  • Steaks – Feel free use different cuts of steaks to make this recipe. Marinade the teriyaki sauce with flank steak, skirt steak, or any that you prefer.
  • Teriyaki Sauce – We love to make homemade sauces but feel free to use store bought teriyaki sauce.

Step by Step Instructions

Combining the marinade in a bowl

Step 1 – In a bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, water, mirin, brown sugar and minced garlic. Then add in grated ginger, sesame oil, honey, and rice vinegar to create the teriyaki marinade.

Marinating the steak in a zip lock bag

Step 2 – Place the sirloin steaks in a large Ziplock bag and pour in the teriyaki marinade. Make sure the steaks are well coated with the marinade. Seal the bag and place in the fridge.

  • Step 3 – Preheat the grill to high-heat. While the grill is heating, remove the steaks from the refrigerator and let them come to room temperature.

Step 4 – Remove the steaks from the marinade, letting the excess drip off. Discard the remaining marinade. Place the steaks on the hot grill and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side for medium-rare, or until they reach your desired level of doneness.

Step 5 – Transfer the grilled steaks to a cutting board and let them rest for 5 minutes to allow the juices to redistribute. Slice the steaks against the grain and transfer to a serving platter. Garnish with a sprinkle of sesame seeds and sliced green onions. Serve and enjoy!

Recipe Tips

  • Marinating Steak – Marinate the steaks for at least 1 hour to allow the flavors to infuse. For best results, an extended marinating time of up to 8 hours is recommended, but avoid marinating for too long as the acidity and salt can start to change the texture of the meat.
  • Grilling Steak – For best results we recommend grilling the steaks after they have come to room temperature. You may even find more tips on How to Grill Filet Mignon.
