What Makes it a Butter Burger?
Butter Burger were invented in Milwaukee at Culvers Restaurant. The ground beef is mixed with butter slices, the onions are cooked in butter as well as the beef patties. To complete this Butter Burger we like to butter the buns and toast to have a crispy bite.
We like to melt cheese slices and add our favorite toppings for a burger that is sure to impress anyone you serve it too.
Ingredients

- Butter – We used unsalted butter divided and softened to easily mix with the ground beef mixture.
- 90/10 Ground Beef – You can use lean ground beef or ground chuck if you prefer. In this recipe, I mix in the butter which adds some much flavor.
- Onion – We like to use a vegetable chopper to dice the onions
- Vegetable Oil – Use any High Smoke Point Oil
- American Cheese – If you prefer you can use other types of cheese
- Hamburger Buns – Use any type of Hamburger buns.

How to Make Butter Burgers
- Step 1 – Preheat the Blackstone grill over medium high heat (approximately 350 degrees Fahrenheit) and set up a cooler zone on the Blackstone grill.

Step 2 – Stir 2 Tablespoons of the butter into the ground beef in a mixing bowl.

Step 3 – Divide the beef into 4 even patties. Season with the salt and pepper. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Step 4 – Spread 4 tablespoons of the butter on both sides of the hamburger buns (approximately 1 tablespoon per bun). Place them on the grill and let the buns toast slightly (approximately 1 minute) and then set aside.

Step 5 – Melt the remaining butter on the Blackstone grill. Add the chopped onions and sauté until soft (approximately 5 minutes). Move the onions to the cooler side of the grill and let cook for a few more minutes until the onions start to brown.

Step 6 – Spread the oil onto the grill or griddle in the hot zone. Place the patties on the grill and gently press them down into thinner patties with either a burger press or large spatula. Let the patties cook for 2-3 minutes without moving them.

Step 7 – Flip the patties and do not press them back down or it’ll release on the flavorful juices in the burger. Allow them to cook on the other side for 1 minute until cooked through. Place a slice of cheese on top of each patty and allow for it to melt (20-30 seconds). Top each of the patties with ¼ of the sautéed onions.
- Step 8 – Remove from the grill and place on the toasted buns. Serve immediately while warm and enjoy!
Expert Tips
- Hamburger Buns – For a classic Wisconsin Butter Burger Recipe, do not skip on the butter the buns and toasting on the griddle.

- Preparing Beef Patties – Combine the beef mixture with the butter and form into patties. Make sure to pack the patties so they do not fall apart while cooking.

Frequently Asked Questions
We recommend using unsalted butter for the best flavor to make these burger patties.
We love the way these burgers cook on the Blackstone Griddle but you can also make in a large pan or a cast iron skillet. Cooking in a cast iron skillet gives the burgers the same texture and juicy center.
Store the leftovers in an airtight container for up to 5 days in the refrigerator. We recommend store the burgers patties separate from the bun bottoms, bun tops and toppings to prevent everything getting soggy.
If you have leftovers reheat the burger patties in the microwave or the oven in a baking dish until reheated through.
