Variations Ideas

  • Pizza Crust – This recipe can be made with a Homemade Pizza Dough Recipe or Grilled Pizza Dough instead. Pizza dough is made with active dry yeast, warm water and mixed with a stand mixer.
  • Pizza Toppings – Add your favorite toppings to this pizza. We recommend black olives, red onion, mushrooms, cooked chicken, and sausage.
  • Seasoning – Choose the seasoning of your choice to the pizza sauce or marinara sauce. Add in garlic, red pepper flakes, oregano, or an Italian Seasoning Blend.
  • Oil – We used avocado oil but you can also use olive oil.

Step by Step Instructions

Step 1 – Preheat the grill to medium-high heat. Brush the inside of a 12-inch cast iron skillet with 1 tablespoon of avocado oil.

Step 2 – On a lightly floured surface, roll out the pizza dough ball to fit the size the cast iron skillet.

Step 3 – Carefully transfer the rolled-out dough to the prepared skillet, pressing it into the bottom and up the sides of the skillet.

Step 4 – Spread the pizza sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.

Step 5 – Sprinkle 1 cup of the shredded mozzarella cheese over the sauce.

Step 6 – Evenly distribute the sliced pepperoni over the cheese. Drizzle the remaining 1 tablespoon of avocado oil over the toppings.

  • Step 7 – Carefully place the skillet on the grill and close the lid.
  • Step 8 – Grill for about 12-15 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the cheese is melted and bubbly. Rotate the skillet occasionally for even cooking.
  • Step 9 – Once the pizza is cooked and melty cheese, carefully remove the skillet from the grill using oven mitts or heat-resistant gloves.
  • Step 10 – Allow the golden-brown pizza to cool for a few minutes before garnishing with fresh basil leaves.
  • Step 11 – Optionally, serve with grated Parmesan cheese sprinkled on top.
