What is a Cheesesteak?

Chicken Cheesesteak Sandwiches is a classic recipe that was made famous in Philadelphia. It is traditionally made with thin slices of steak on a flat top grill. The meat is cooked with chopped onions but sliced green bell peppers and mushrooms are commonly added.

Cheese such as Cheez Whiz, Provolone, or White American Cheese is added to the top of the cooked meat and melted for even more flavor. We used ground chicken for our recipe for a delicious variation, so use what you prefer. You can even make in a skillet on the stovetop for an amazing classic Chicken Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich Recipe.

Ingredients

Ingredients - Avocado Oil, ground chicken, onion, salt, pepper, garlic powder, provolone cheese, hoagie rolls, butter
  • Avocado Oil – Feel free to use vegetable oil, olive oil, canola oil or coconut oil instead. Any oil with a high smoke point works great in this recipe.
  • Ground Chicken – You can also prepare with sliced skinless chicken breasts
  • White Onion – We recommend using a vegetable chopper to dice the onions or a sharp knife on a cutting board.
  • Garlic Powder – You can also use Minced Garlic Cloves
  • Provolone Cheese – You can use any type of cheese that you prefer
  • Hoagie Rolls – Make this recipe with any type of sandwich bread
  • Butter – We used unsalted butter

Variations Ideas

  • Seasoning – Feel free to change the spices to what you prefer. We have even used Italian Seasoning for a delicious variations.
  • Change Meat – Ground chicken is a great option because cooks quick and easy but feel free to use ground beef or a meat of your choice.
  • Toppings – Add your favorite toppings for even more flavor. We suggest slice tomato, more onions and chopped lettuce.
  • Sub Roll – Having the right hoagie really makes this Cheesesteak even better. We like to use a roll that is big and chewy such as a Kaiser Roll or Italian Hoagie. We like to get them from our local bakery.

How to Make Chicken Cheesesteak

  • Step 6 – Use your spatula to scoop and lift each pile and place the mixture onto one of the toasted hoagie rolls.
  • Step 7 – Serve this Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich immediately while warm and enjoy!

Recipe Tips

  • Prepare Blackstone Griddle – Before cooking the ground chicken and veggies, make sure to preheat the griddle to medium heat or medium high heat and add oil. This helps to cook the chicken quick and easy with the best flavor and texture.
  • Hoagies – For the full Philly Cheesesteak experience we recommend toasting the bun. Each bite is full of crispy bread, cheesy chicken and tons of flavor.
  • Serving Size – This recipe is written to serve 4. But we like to double the recipe since I have a large family and the chicken is great leftover. Make sure to evenly divide the chicken mixture on the griddle for each serving and to melt the cheese.
