How to Grill a Ribeye
- Step 1 – Heat Grill – Preheat the grill over high heat (approximately 500 degrees F). You want the grill to be hot to get a good sear on the steaks.
- Step 2 – Season Steaks – Make sure that the steaks are dry and are at room temperature. Combine the garlic powder, salt and pepper together in a small bowl. Then season the steaks with the seasoning mixture (approximately ½ per steak).

- Step 3 – Oil the Grill – Rub the grill grates with the oil .
- Step 4 – Sear Steaks – Place the rib eye steaks on the hot grill. Let them cook for 2-3 minutes and do not move them to get a good sear on the steaks.
- Step 5 – Flip Steaks – Then use tongs to gently lift and flip the steak. If the steaks are still sticking to the grill, this means that they need more time and they are not ready to flip yet.

- Step 6 – Continue Cooking Steaks – Flip the steaks onto a separate section of the grill. Then cook the steaks for 2-3 more minutes to sear the opposite side of the steaks. Grill time will vary based on the size of your steaks.
- Step 7 – Reduce Temperature – Then reduce the temperature on the grill to medium heat. Cook the steak until they are done to your preference. Use an instant read meat thermometer to check the steak temperature. The recipe notes have the internal temperature for each steak preference listed.
- Step 8 – Prepare Fresh Herbs Butter – While the steak is grilling, prepare the garlic butter. Place all the garlic butter ingredients in a mixing bowl. Use a hand held mixer to beat all the ingredients together. Chill until ready to use.
- Step 9 – Top Steaks with Butter – Then top each perfect ribeye steak with approximately 1 Tbsp of the garlic butter and let the butter melt into the steak.
- Step 10 – Remove Steaks, Serve and Enjoy – Let the steak rest for 10 minutes and then they are ready to serve warm and then enjoy with salads and veggies.
Expert Tips
- Crispy Texture – If you prefer a crispy texture, we recommend allow the steak to cook over direct heat. This allows the steak to sear and then continue cooking over low heat.
- Meat Thermometer – Use meat thermometer to make sure the steak is cooked to your desired temperature. We recommend using a meat thermometer instead of slicing into steaks.
- Room Temperature – All the steaks to be at room temperature before placing on the grill.
- Rest steaks – We recommend after grilling the steaks to allow the steaks to rest before slicing. This locks in the moisture to make a juicy steaks, tender and delicious. As your steak rest, it continues to cook so keep that in mind when grilling your steaks.
- Prepare Grates – You may need to oil the grill grates with olive oil to prevent the steaks from sticking.
- Season Steaks – Make sure to season steaks thoroughly. The kosher salt and black pepper really brings out the flavors in the steak.
- Trim Fat – If you prefer you can trim off any fat. A little fat helps to provide flavor but it could prevent the steak from catching fire. We like a little fat marbling throughout the steak.
- Garlic Butter – We recommend always topping your steak with a little garlic butter. It really does make a difference in the taste and adds moisture to your steak.
How Long to Cook Ribeye on the Grill
Cooking ribeye on the grill doesn’t take long. It will depend on how well you want the center cooked. Make sure the grill is on high heat to give the steaks a nice sear. You will want to sear each side of the steak for about 2 minutes.
After searing the steaks, reduce the heat and continue cooking until the temperature you prefer your steak to be. Make sure to use a meat thermometer to cook to your preferred doneness.
Cooking time may vary depending on the size of your steak and your grill. We recommend closing the lid of your grill for best results.

Steak Temperature & Doneness Guide
The best way to test for doneness is by inserting an instant read thermometer into the thickest part of the steak. Do this through the side, not the top of the steak.
These results will be the same for bone-in Ribeye Steak.
Steak Doneness is your personal preference
- Rare – 120F, cool to warm red center
- Medium-Rare Steak – 130F, Warm red center
- Cook Medium – 140F, Hot pink center
- Medium Well – 150F, Mostly brown center
- Well Done – 160F, full brown in color
