How to Make Homemade Pizza Dough

Mixing the dry ingredients in a bowl with a wooden spoon

Step 1 – Mix Dry Ingredients – In a large mixing bowl, stir together 1 cup of the flour, yeast, sugar, salt, garlic powder and basil leaves with a wooden spoon.

Mixing oil and water to the dry ingredients to form a dough in a bowl with a wooden spoon

Step 2 – Mix in oil and water – Add in the olive oil and the warm water.  Stir until well combined.

Form the dough in a ball in the bowl

Step 3 – Form the dough into a ball – Then slowly add in the remaining flour, stirring until the dough is formed into a ball and begins to pull away from the sides of the bowl.  The ball will be sticky but still easily manageable with your hands.

Step 6 – Heat Griddle – Preheat the Blackstone grill over medium high heat. Once the dough has risen, move the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead the bread a few times until it’s smooth.  Then roll the dough into a 12 inch circle with a rolling pin.

  • Step 7 – Poke Holes – Use a fork to poke holes all over the center of the pizza dough to keep it from bubbling in the oven.

Recipe Tips

  • Make Ahead – This pizza dough can be made ahead of time.  Let the dough rise at room temperature, then deflate it and wrap the dough in plastic wrap (so it doesn’t dry out) and refrigerate for 2-3 days.
  • Combine Ingredients – Combine the dough ingredients with wooden spoon in a bowl. You can also combine ingredients with a dough hook with a stand mixer.
  • Dough Texture – When combining the ingredients the dough maybe a little sticky and manageable with your hands.
  • Allow Dough to Rise – Place the pizza dough in a oiled bowl and cover. Allow the dough to rise and double in size before cooking.
  • Knead Dough – Knead the dough until the dough is smooth on a flour surface. Then roll the dough out into a 12 inch circle.
  • Poke Holes in Dough – Before placing the dough poke holes with a fork. This keeps the dough from bubbling up on the griddle.
  • Cook the dough – Cook the dough for about 3 minutes on each side on the griddle until it is golden brown. After placing the topping, the pizza will be cooked in about 15 minutes and ready to serve.
  • Blackstone Pizza Oven – Instead of preparing the pizza on the Blackstone, place the prepared pizza on a baking sheet or pizza pan and bake in the oven.
  • Cheese –  We used shredded mozzarella but you can use any type of cheese you prefer. Colby Jack is delicious for a blend of cheeses. I also like sliced fresh mozzarella.
  • Personal Pizzas – Feel free to use smaller individual personal size pizza crusts. Everyone can make their own pizza and customize with toppings.
