Fried onions are the ultimate topping to your favorite hamburgers recipe. It pairs perfectly with slice tomatoes, mustard, lettuce, pickles, and ketchup. Choose onions that are cooked soft or golden and crispy. They add flavor and texture to your burger patties so every bite is mouthwatering.

How to Fry Onions on Blackstone
- Step 1 – Cut and Prepare your Onions – Cut the onions in half with a sharp knife. Then cut the ends off of each half and peel the onions. Slice the onions into thin half moons and separate the rings with your fingers.

- Step 2 – Prepare your Griddle – Preheat the Griddle or Blackstone Griddle over medium heat (approximately 350-400 degrees F).
- Step 3 – Add Onions to Griddle – Place the onions directly on the hot griddle and place the avocado oil and butter on top.

- Step 4 – Begin Cooking the Onions – Sauté the onions for about 10-15 minutes stirring them every few minutes until the the onions are soft and a light brown color.

- Step 5 – Top with a Burger Press – You can also top the onions with a burger press to speed up the cooking process as well and the onions will brown quicker.

- Step 6 – Perfectly Grilled Onions – Then they are ready to serve with your favorite type of ground beef burger and enjoy.
Expert Tips
- Add Seasoning – You can season them with salt, black pepper, and even garlic to the grilled onions.
- Freeze Saute Onions – Freeze the sauté onion and a airtight container. They can be frozen for about 6 months. When you are ready to serve, thaw in the refrigerator. Reheat in the microwave or in a skillet.
- Cast Iron Skillet – You can also cook these onions in a cast iron skillet oiled with olive oil.
- Gas Grill – Oil the grill grates, place the onions in a foil pack and grill.

These are best served fresh but you can also place in the fridge for up to 5 days. Heat the grilled onions and add them to your leftover for an amazing lunch the next day.
Cooking the onions on the griddle doesn’t it take long. The take about 10-15 minutes until the onions start to brown on medium high heat. Stirring frequently until the onions are fully cooked.
We like them to have a little crisp around the edges before pulling them off the griddle.

What can you substitute for the avocado oil?
You can use vegetable oil. I don’t recommend olive oil, because it cannot handle the high heat.
